Effexor Dosage

Effexor is a brand for venlafaxine, a medication that stops reuptake of serotonin and norepinphrine from the pre-synaptic nerve ending where they are released. By increasing the amount of serotonin and norepinphrine in the brain it is used to treat depression and anxiety. Effexor dosage is usually started very low and gradually increased to avoid effexor side effects.

Effexor dosage starts at 37.5 mg for a week, and is then increased to an Effexor dosage of 75mg daily. The Effexor dosage is halved in people with liver and kidney problems. Effexor is generally available as a slow release capsule; therefore the pellets in the capsule cannot be crushed, but it may be emptied on apple sauce or in water and taken immediately. A maximum Effexor dosage may be up to 225 mg may be used, and the higher doses have more norepinephrine reuptake effect, whereas at the lower dosage the effect is primarily on the serotonin reuptake. Care should be taken when a high dose of Effexor is being used as it may trigger serotonin toxicity, a medical condition where high blood pressure may pose a threat. It is not recommended in children and pregnant women. Effexor withdrawal is also commonly encountered, and most patients need to slowly taper off their Effexor dosage.

Effexor is used to treat depression and other mental conditions, but it is not recommended in people who have high blood pressure as it may increase the blood pressure even more. Severely high blood pressure may cause kidney and heart failure if not treated early; medical attention is needed when a person is suspected of suffering from serotonin toxicity.  Share a comment if effexorwithdrawal.com inspired you, and we thank you for making us the leaders in helping those suffering from effexor withdrawal online.

  1. I have been taking 300mg of Effexor XR for a couple years now. It works amazing for me! My doc tried to take me off of it and switch to a different antidepressant a while ago, and I think I got down to 75 mg before the suicidality set in. Mind you, I had no physical symptoms, just the suicidal thoughts. Luckily, I was being monitored closely, so I was hospitalized for 11 days, during which we restarted the Effexor and discontinued the other, non effective Remeron. I’m also on Wellbutrin XL, Lamictal, and lithium. This is all to treat my depression (I am not bipolar). So far it is working pretty good!
